Estimates have shown that approximately 1 in 200 men are born with what is commonly referred to as a micro-penis. A micro-penis is less than 7cm where as the average size penis is approximately 12.5cm or 5 inches.
Effects and Traditional Treatment
A micro-penis typically develops as a result of inadequate levels of certain hormones such as testosterone during the prenatal stages. Previously doctors would suggest gender reassignment, one of the most renowned cases being that of John Money at the John Hopkins University during the 1970’s. With advancements in medicine and technology, there are now a number of treatments available to treat men suffering from this disorder.
Alternative Treatments or Penile Enlargement

The University College London has recently refined a phalloplasty or penis enlargement technique designed to treat a micro-penis. This treatment involves the grafting of skin from the forearm, rolling it, and shaping it as a penis approximately 5 inches in length. The skin is then transplanted onto the existing penile tissue in order to maintain sensation. A urethra is then installed into the false penis along with an inflatable prosthesis which allows the penis to urinate and allows for a patient to achieve an erection.
These surgeries were found to be approximately 50% effective, while some patients required multiple operations to correct shifting of the prosthesis or infections. For men suffering from such a disorder, this form of surgery is drastic but can offer young men a second chance, increasing self-esteem and confidence. Essentially, it allows them to partake in sexual intercourse and lead an average or normal life.
